My mentor James is very direct.
Direct is good.
I have a few ‘James-isms’ written on my wall.
These are things I know, but need to re-learn often (sometimes daily!).
My favourite:
“The trouble with clever people is that we over-complicate the f*%k out of everything”
It both accuses me and reminds me of the power of simplifying the complex to improve performance, win back time and have more fun.
I call it Simplexity.
Yesterday I put this into action
I was with the ELT of one of my corporate clients, working on their Mission Statement. Using a fantastic framework, we arrived at a one-pager that:
– every employee will be able to remember
– clearly states the 3 critical targets we need to achieve
– defines key characteristics and actions they need to demonstrate
Short, simple, effective.
No corporate speak or $100 words.
No over-complication.
We’ll bake this into stand-up meetings, job ads, position descriptions and employee shout-outs. It will be in daily use.
The team left excited, certain that this simple one-pager will work hard to drive performance.
For most of us Simplexity, is the path to success
Find the thing your customer loves.
Make it easy to buy…
AND easy to deliver.
Then scale.
In other words – Simple done consistently well.
That’s my focus for 2024 and I’ll be sharing more on what that looks like soon.
