Corporate Career stuck? How to set yourself up to fulfil your total potential

I’ve been coaching professionals to set up their post-corporate career for over a decade. I recently reflected on some common themes I have observed working with hundreds of clients since leaving my own corporate career in 2011.

To set the scene, there is no lack of intelligence or grit. My clients are smart, experienced professionals, typically over 45, usually corporate executives. They will all be perceived as successful from the outside and are an even mix of men and women

Common problems I see when we start working together are they:

Know they are not fulfilling their total potential (impact, income, meaning)

• Often uncertain about what they want to do next

• Lack a sense of progression in their current role

• Believe everyone else has got it all worked out

• Feel their current employer has little interest in their development

• Are not accountable to anyone else for their growth

• Know their network is old/tired and don’t know how to reboot it

• Question the value of what they offer

• Worry about money – now and in the future

• Often experience low levels of confidence and belief

• Feel their career is stalled or going backwards

• Are concerned that others are overtaking them

• Have no personal brand or visibility outside of their employer (but suspect they need one)

In summary, I work with a lot of smart people who have lost their career momentum, or know they are ready to start the next phase of their professional life as a self-employed consultant/advisor/coach, business owner or founder.

They are at the intersection between two life seasons, aching to begin their next chapter but not clear what it looks like or how to transition without risk to income and status.

They realise they are not showing up as the would like to and know they need to do something about it.

They also realise they probably need help.

As my own coach pointed out to me recently, people are only frustrated if they are not happy with their lot – whatever that looks like.

So if this doesn’t resonate, you probably stopped reading already!

If it DOES, you’ll see that, as I say to my clients, ‘you are special….but not unique’.

I hope this fact gives you comfort, but also encourages you to TAKE ACTION. I have also had conversations with many people who, when faced with the realities of personal change, chose to stay where they were.

This gave them short-term comfort (no-risk, safety, status quo maintained), but of course, did nothing to address what frustrated them in the first place. They stay stuck.

Unhappy. Unfulfilled. Always wondering what could have been…..

Please don’t do that! Life’s too short to play it small.

I encourage you to ‘answer the call’ you feel inside to explore your next chapter and fully confront your total potential.
